Sound On Sound (Jan 2023): "Huge fun, and musically potent. A dedicated pattern sequencer for your DAW that opens up all sorts of polyrhythmic, pseudo-random, non-linear possibilities."
Tom Rowlands, from the Chemical Brothers, said: "Strokes is an amazing device for rhythmic inspiration. It's a lot of fun to play with and can lead to some very cool unexpected patterns and combinations."
CDM praised the device, calling it "really elegant... a semi-modular powerhouse for exploring polyrhythms, both in musical note/percussion patterns and modulation. So, uh... whoa."
DJ Mag recommended Strokes for DJs and producers looking to create intricate sequencer patterns.
MusicRadar described it as an "instant inspiration generator," while International Orange referred to it as an "elevated groovebox."
Welcome to Strokes.
An all-in-one, cross-platform workstation for sequencing, sampling, and synthesis.
The idea behind this device is to encourage free-flow experimentation and exploration of rhythm and modulation. The architecture of Strokes is complex but designed to be intuitive for users of all experience levels. By setting up sounds and adjusting parameters, users can create interesting and unique results easily. The cross-patched sequencing and modulation elements work together symbiotically to produce cohesive patterns.
The first four sequencer channels are user-configurable, while the other four respond dynamically based on these settings. Each channel can be assigned one of 16 oscillators from Mutable Instruments’ Plaits module or be linked to custom samples with diverse sound design features. Strokes offers probability settings to introduce semi-random variations to sequences, and onboard reverb and delay effects enhance the generated sounds. Various modulation options enable users to alter sounds and effects subtly or drastically in response to rhythmic changes within the project.
Instead of relying on strict pattern programming or predefined randomness, Strokes facilitates creating surprising music with an emphasis on enjoyment. While nothing is accidental, the spontaneous nature of creating music with Strokes provides an unpredictable journey during jams. With pattern and melodic information storage capabilities within each project, users can obtain different outcomes each time they engage with the device.
Strokes functions as a VST3 or AU plug-in in major DAW platforms, allowing MIDI data generated to control external software and hardware instruments. On iOS, Strokes operates as a standalone app or within hosts like AUM.
Desktop VST3 & AU versions are available for purchase separately at congburn.co.uk/strokes
